Join the Methodist Ministries podcast as Lucas and I discuss Finney’s life, character, spiritual formation and guiding principles in his theological system. Charles Finney (1792-1875) was the premiere evangelist of the pre-Civil War era, a supporter of abolition, the President and professor of theology at Oberlin College.
Finney’s revivals in the 1820s and 1830s are famous for their powerful movement of God’s Spirit and the number of conversions. Even though Finney was ordained in the Presbyterian church, he adopted Arminian principles and promoted the Wesleyan message of Christian perfection. However, Finney was very controversial for adopting revival methods that would reshape evangelism in America and around the world. Trained as a lawyer and a student of Enlightenment moral philosophy, Finney’s theology has been sharply criticized by both Arminians and Calvinists. But many fail to understand the principles behind his theology.
In this podcast I explain Finney’s guiding principles so readers of Finney can better understand what he believed and why he believed as he did. And then let the audience decide what they think of Finney as a revivalist, educator, and theologian.
